LONDON (AFP) – A Briton accused of hacking into US military and NASA computers faces extradition to the United States after the British government rejected last-ditch requests to block the move.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson concluded that sending Gary McKinnon to the United States would not breach his human rights, and said he has no general discretionary powers to stop the extradition.

"If Mr McKinnon's human rights would be breached, I must stop the extradition. If they wol discretionary powers to stop the extradition.

"If Mr McKinnon's human rights would be breached, I must stop the extradition. If they would not be breached, the extradition must go ahead," Johnson said in a statement.

"As the courts have affirmed, I have no general discretion," he said.

McKinnon, who suffers from a form of autism, could spend life in prison if convicted by a US court of gaining access to 97 computers in 2001 and 2002 in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

His family and lawyers have warned throughout the long-running case that McKinnon, who has Asperger's Syndrome, could commit suicide or suffer psychosis if the extradition went ahead.

McKinnon's mother, Janis Sharp, slammed the decision as "devastating" and "barbaric," adding that her son was terrified of extradition.

"To force a peaceful, vulnerable, misguided UFO fanatic like Gary thousands of miles away from his much-needed support network is barbaric," she said.

"This is a cruel and miserable decision," she told the BBC, adding that the gl discretionary powers to stop the extradition.

Obama could lock in Afghanistan decision Monday

WASHINGTON – The White House said President Barack Obama could use an unusual evening war council session Monday to lock in his long-awaited decision on whether to commit tens of thousands of new U.S. forces to the stalemated war in Afghanistan.

Military officials and others said they expect Obama to settle on a middle-ground

option that would deploy an eventual 32,000 to 35,000 U.S. forces to the 8-year-old conflict.

That rough figure has stood as the most likely option since before Obama's last large war council meeting earlier this month, when he tasked military planners with rearranging the timing and makeup of some of the deployments.

The president has said with increasing frequency in recent days that a big piece of As White House press secretary Robert Gibbs put it to reporters on Monday, it's "not just how we get people there, but what's the strategy for getting them out."

Obama was holding the 10th meeting of his Afghanistan strategy review since mid-September on Monday night, with a large cast of foreign policy advisers, to go over that revised information from war planners.

In the 90-minute session in the Situation Room, "they'll go through some of the questions that the president had, some additional answers to what he'd asked for, and have a discussion about that," Gibbs said.

The meeting was arranged for the unusual nighttime slot to accommodate both Obama's packed public schedule on Monday and the fact that many of his top advisers were leaving town for the holiday. No more war council meetings are on the calendar.

The presidential spokesman said it was possible Obama could lock in a decision at Monday's meeting or that it could come "over the course of the next several days." In either case, it will not be announced this week, he said.

The force infusion expected by the military would represent most but not all the troops requested by Obama's war commander, for a retailored war plan that blends elements of Gen. Stanley McChrystal's counterterror strategy with tactics more closely associated with the CIA's unacknowledged war to hunt down terrorists across the border in Pakistan.

McChrystal presented options ranging from about 10,000 to about 80,000 forces, and told Obama he preferred an addition of about 40,000 atop the record 68,the rethinking of options that he ordered had to do with building an exit strategy into the announcement — in other words, revising the options presented to him to clarify when U.S. troops would turn over responsibility to the Afghan government and under what conditions.

Jennifer Lopez Copies Beyonce And Releases A New Song

Beyonce turned a few heads when jennifer released her album last year under her alter ego, Sasha Fierce. But Jennifer Lopez is turning even more heads now because people are asking themselves: “WTF, didn’t Bey do this last year?” J.Lo has released her new single, “Fresh Out the Oven,” under the alias “Lola,” which is Marc Anthony’s pet name for her. And Lola, similar to Sasha, has her own website too. The song really isn’t original;

it’s Jennifer’s typical dance music. While I could do without rapper Pitbull on it, the song itself is kind of catchy and in step with most pop music out now—it’s Autotuned within an inch of its life, but J.Lo still sounds like she’s screeching when hitting the high notes. I’m happy Jennifer is working again because those twins of hers have to eat.

Calif. launches probe into scam targeting churches

LOSE ANGELS – California is investigating several companies suspected of bilking churches nationwide of hundreds of thousands of dollars through fraudulent computer leasing schemes, authorities said Friday.

State Attorney General Jerry Brown said as many as 30 Southern California churches may have been defrauded, with the same companies suspected of bilking other churches in as many as 10 other states.

The companies offered churches free computer kiosks that could serve as electronic message boards and generate advertising revenue, Brown said.

"Instead, churches were left with leases as high as $45,000 per year for what amounted to little more than desktop computers and printers housed in podium-sized wooden boxes," the attorney general's office said in a statement.

"Instead, churches were left with leases as high as $45,000 per year for what amounted to little more than desktop computers and printers housed in podium-sized wooden boxes," the attorney general's office said in a statement.

The leasing companies later filed lawsuits against churches to collect payments, interest and late fees, Brown said.

Standing beside a defunct computer system at the Bryant Temple Church in South Los Angeles, the Rev. Clyde Oden Jr. said the kiosks seemed to present an opportunity for the church to raise funds.

"This seemed to be a cutting-edge opportunity, that's how it was presented to us. It turns out that the cut was against us," said Oden, whose church leased a system in 2006.

Oden said he initially received quarterly checks for $3,000, supposedly for kiosk advertising, from Maryland-based Urban Interfaith Network and Television Broadcasting Online. But Oden said he had to pay the entire amount to the company that had leased the machine. The checks stopped after a year, he added.

Brown's office said it had served subpoenas at Urban Interfaith Network and Television Broadcasting Online. Lawyers for the companies couldn't be immediately located.

Brown said his office was investigating three men and a woman who owned the companies that offered the kiosks. Two of the men were charged in Michigan last month with racketeering, fraud and other crimes. Prosecutors there contend they bilked 21 churches of about $660,000.

Also subpoenaed were three leasing companies — Irvine-based Balboa Capital Corp.; United Leasing Associates of America Ltd. of Brookfield, Wis.; and San Francisco-based Banc of America Leasing and Capital LLC.

Banc of America Leasing is a subsidiary of Bank of America.

E-mails left for Balboa and United Leasing seeking comment were not immediately returned.

Banc of America spokesman Will Wilson said the firm was cooperating with the probe and it had been unaware of any allegations of wrongdoing at the time it did business with companies involved in the alleged scam.

There's one less human teen for "Twilight's" vampires and werewolves to fight over.

After a concert in Cleveland, "Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus told an interviewer from a local radio station that she hasn't seen the first movie and doesn't plan on catching any future installments.

"I don't believe in it," Miley told Q92 reporter a. "I don't like vampires. I don't like the wolf that pops out of the screen when I'm watching my TV at night. I don't like it. I don't want anything to do with it. I don't like the shirts. I don't like any of it."

Cyrus isn't totally out of touch with Hollywood: She recently filmed a cameo for "Sex and the City 2."

U.S. lags in paid sick days, work benefits, study says

NEW YORK (Reuters) — The United States lags far behind other nations in offering paid sick days, paid parental leave and other workplace benefits that proponents consider vital to public health and workers rights, according to research released Tuesday.

The eight-year study found the most economically competitive nations offer forms of paid leave to workers that the United States does not, according to researchers at Harvard University and Canada's McGill University.

Of the world's 15 most competitive nations, 14 mandate paid sick leave, 13 guarantee paid maternal leave and 12 provide paid paternal leave by law, they said. Eleven provide paid leave to care for children's health and eight provide paid leave for adult family care.
